On Saturday, October 6, 2007, the Hazelwood Initiative will again host this run along Second Avenue past businesses and churches and up through residential areas. The event is supported in part by PNC Bank, National City, Citiparks, Pennsylvania Department of Economic Development, Gombas Development, Kerotest, and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh Flight Training Center, and others. Since its incorporation in 1999, Hazelwood Initiative has taken the lead on issues involving the well-being and redevelopment of Greater Hazelwood. As we plan the 10th run, our focus this year is community development and revitalization. Our event will highlight recent and ongoing efforts to revitalize the Hazelwood community. Race participants will pass by the construction site of six new single family homes, valued at approximately $1.5 million. These homes mark the first new construction in Hazelwood since 1992 and symbolize future development and growth for Hazelwood. In addition to showcasing Hazelwood’s progress, this year’s race is in collaboration with the Church of the Good Shepherd and St. Stephen’s Parish and is an all day community event. Immediately following the race, from 11AM until 3PM, the Church of the Good Shepherd will hold its annual health fair. (Click here for more information). A variety of health care providers will be on hand to conduct screenings, answer questions and provide information. Following the health fair at 3PM, St. Stephen’s Parish will hold its annual Apple Harvest Fest. There will be games and activities for the whole family. As you can see, this year’s race promises to be a full and exciting day for all. Races in previous years have proven to be great successes for the Hazelwood Initiative and for the community as a whole. In its seventh season, we brought in close to 140 runners and walkers. The event is always a tremendous amount of fun with balloon displays overhead, police motorcades, and various forms of entertainment. Spectators line the race course and everyone has a wonderful time. This year we expect over 200 runners.
