New to the Greater Hazelwood community within the last few months is Sophia Plaza, an attractive new structure located at the corner of Flowers and Second Avenues. The first business to open within the Plaza was the Super-Suds Laundromat, an air-conditioned facility, opened 7 days a week from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM (last wash at 9:00 PM). It is a large, clean, well-maintained facility, equipped to accommodate a large clientele and volumes of laundry.

Joining Sophia Plaza in June is Salıs Scotch Bottom Deli. It will celebrate its Grand Opening on August 2, 2002. This newest addition to Sophia Plaza is open daily with hours from 6:00 am to 9:00 PM Monday through Friday, and 8:00 am until 9:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. The delicatessen offers a reasonably priced sit-down full and side order breakfast menu or take-out for those on the run. Steve Gombas, owner/operator of Sophia Plaza pays tribute to our former steel town in the name he has chosen for the Deli. If that doesnıt impress you, stop in, check the menu and order one of the man-sized, mouth-watering sandwich specials with names like The Hard Hat, The Blast Furnace, The Steelworker, The Coal Pile, and many more that include sides of fries and slaw. The menu includes a daily special, Pizza - whole or by the slice, and deserts for those with a sweet tooth. Steve has plans of offering a ³smart card² that can be purchased for various amounts and used for purchases at Salıs. You can purchase domestic and imported beers for ³take-out² only.

Although each business has its own separate entrance, all are integral within the building and can be reached easily through hallways and an elevator to the second floor. During my visit I noticed some customers of the deli included those enjoying a meal or coffee and desert while waiting in between their wash loads at the Laundromat. Bathroom facilities are included on both floors. The second floor, with basic construction completed, is geared to be finished to meet the needs of future occupants.
