MASTER PLAN CONSULTANT ON BOARD
Lisa Kunst Vavro

"The New Hazelwood Vision" Master Plan process has begun with the selected consultant, The Saratoga Associates (TSA). From Tuesday, February 20th through Thursday, February 22nd, three representatives from TSA, Dan Sitler, Peter Fairweather, and Lisa Nagle were in town to meet and interview various stakeholder groups. Since the Master Plan includes Junction Hollow as well as Hazelwood, meetings were held with Four Mile Run residents; Boundary Street residents; South Craig Street neighborhood and merchants; the Schenley Park Task Force and recreation advocates. In Hazelwood, meetings were conducted with the faith-based community leaders; a focus group from Hazelwood Initiative; and various Hazelwood merchants. Also included in this three-day orientation, were meetings with Oakland institutions; Deputy Mayor Tom Cox; Council President O'Connor's office; the foundation community and the Turnpike Commission along with Mackin Engineers.
Community outreach meetings conducted by TSA, as well as, the small-scale public meetings which were held in seven different sectors of Greater Hazelwood by the Department of City Planning, during October-November 2000, comprise only the first step in this Master Planning effort. Next, TSA will hold two community meetings, one in each primary community, Hazelwood and Oakland. The location of these meetings has yet to be confirmed. Therefore, the Hazelwood community meeting will take place on one of three tentative dates (April 3rd, 4th, or 5th). Next, a design workshop ("charrette") will be conducted. This design workshop is tentatively scheduled for May 5, 2001.
From this design workshop, an overall vision will be formulated to guide future development of the LTV site and the revitalization of the community as a whole. Physical connections will be explored linking Hazelwood and Oakland, including enhancement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic patterns. Recreational opportunities will be identified as well as potential riverfront connections. A very comprehensive plan should evolve from this effort, "The New Hazelwood Vision."

A compilation of meeting notes or the "wish list" from the small-scale public meetings accompanies this article. (Compiled by Wanda Wilson, Neighborhood Planner, City of Pittsburgh's Department of City Planning.) Look for future dreams you may have for Greater Hazelwood. Any other possibilities are also welcome to be known at the community meeting in April and/or the design workshop in May. BE INVOLVED, JOIN THE EFFORT, DEVELOP THE VISION!!!
