Last year, The Hazelwood Initiative, Inc., The Hazelwood Youth Mentorship and Athletic Association, Glen Hazel Resident Management Corporation, Center of Life and the Hazelwood YMCA celebrated Hometown Sports Heroes.

The event honored, Herbert P. Douglas, former Hazelwood resident and bronze medal winner of the 1948 Olympics. The evening also included a special dedication of the Sprout Fund Mural depicting Mr. Douglas. In addition, a commemoration of Eric Carter took place. Various cheerleader squads performed and the crowd enjoyed the musical performances of Erica Ogden.

The following Saturday, September 9, 2006,  four youth football games, more sports hero recognitions, crowning of age group Kings and Queens, and a field goal-kicking competition took place at Burgwin Field. The COBRAS also kicked off their football season. Read more about this event in the October edition of the Hazelwood Homepage.

The community came out in full force to make this event a spectacular occasion.

Reverend Mike Murray, Herbert P. Douglas and HI Chair Reverend Tim Smith
